There is a river in Macedon, and there is also, moreover, a river at Monmouth. It is called Wye at Monmouth, but it out of my prains what is the name of the other river. But ‘tis all one; ‘tis alike as my fingers is to my fingers, and there is salmons in both.
FLUELLEN, Henry V, Act 4, Scene 7
SALMON
Salmon is mentioned 3 times in Shakespeare’s works, in Henry V, Othello and Two Noble Kinsmen.
The Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) is found in rivers across Britain and Ireland, and in Europe from Portugal to Scandinavia. It migrates from the sea to freshwater rivers to spawn. Wild Atlantic Salmon numbers have declined significantly over recent decades and there are a number of organisations and projects working to increase their numbers.
Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the return of Salmon to the Clyde with tales of folklore, history & fish migration (Monday 4th December: Event Link)
